Househunting

It's coming to the time where I am starting to try and find a new house for when I move back. Problem is, I am still 1,700 miles away from where we are stationed so it's not turning out to be ab easy task. I may just be too picky, but I am so worried that I am going to get something I don't like and become very unhappy with if I am not there to at least see it before I sign the lease.

I have debated flying there for a weekend to just go and look at various places, or renting a car to drive down while I'm in Boston. I'm so frustrated over it, even though I'm supposed to be on vacation, I feel like if I don't start worrying about it now, then at the least minute I'm going to be screwed.... How many of you have had to deal with this? What helped you make the final decision?

  1. I just went through this! I moved home to Alabama while M was deployed. The last month and a half of the deployment were so stressful trying to find a place in NY while living in Alabama. I did a lot of research on the internet. If it didn't have pictures, I just breezed right by it. Truth be told, I actually found our place on craigslist. What my final decision came down to was based on whether or not they accepted large dogs and male cats and was relatively cheap.

    Good luck!!

  2. I'm going the same thing with finding a place up in North Dakota. There's a housing shortage and I'm so worried that we will be stuck finding a place to live that's 2+ hours away.

I did this during our fourth deployment. I actually went back to CA early, leaving my kids with their grandparents so that my son could finish school. It is very stressful trying to find a house when you're not in the area. I actually found a couple of options and set up appts to see them. I highly recommend doing it this way. Don't sign a lease, sight unseen.

This time I have to do it before we move. From CA to MD. Its a little more complicated because Mister wants to see the house as well and we have a larger dog (and she's an AmStaff) so people are not always keen on renting out to us.

Good luck with the house hunt!

  4. I did this during deployment, but thankfully my family was still in the Virginia Beach area, so I got to stay. BUT we did go through this when we were PCSing and it is hard and extremely frustrating trying to do it 700 miles away. Try to think of the positives, you did get to live in the area before hand. So you sort of know the areas you want to be in. Maybe if its affordable fly up and see the apartments you have it narrowed down to.
